• Repair damage: Replace any rotting or deteriorated boards that are more prone to ignition.
• Improve deck-to-wall protection: Install a minimum 6-inch vertical metal flashing at all deck-to-wall intersections.
• Target high-risk areas: If full replacement isn’t feasible, upgrade the first 1 foot of decking closest to the home with noncombustible materials.
• Remove under-deck combustibles: Eliminate storage and flammable materials beneath the deck.
• Maintain defensible space: Ensure proper clearance, especially for decks located on slopes.
• Keep it clean: Regularly clear debris from both the surface and underside of the deck.
